I started programming over four years ago now, when I took up a web design evening class - I wanted to learn JavaScript. I had been learning HTML and CSS in my spare time, and now with JavaScript under my belt as well, I began producing applications using the three technologies togther - more commonly known as DHTML (Dynamic HTML). The first one I wrote was a set of pages to teach you to type - numbers, letters, words and sentences were generated at random, then you were timed on how fast you could type them in. Not a particularly useful program, but it was my first.

Soon I realised DHTML's limitations, and wanted to expand. A couple of my friends were taking Computer Science courses, and so I borrowed some of the coursework and homework materials.. I found them easy, and was hooked on Visual Basic. From there, I bought my own copy, and devoted the next three years to learning it, inside out. In that time, I found my speciality to be Winsock, and networking/communications. Early this year, once I'd built up enough resources, I founded www.WinsockVB.com - which I now run in my spare time.

During this time, I began to work as a freelance developer. I completed one or two small websites for friends, and one professionally - www.BurwellPrint.co.uk. WinsockVB was expanding, and soon I realised that it's current format wasn't going to work, so I spent my time learning PHP and Perl, to be used with a MySQL database - so that the whole site was driven dynamically.
