Description:
1. Guide lines:
a. The due date is 8:00 PM Thursday March 7, 2002.
b. You are advised to check the web page frequently for possible due date extension.
c. You are allowed to submit as many times as you need as long as the resubmitted project is differing from the one you are previously submitted.
d. Team work may be granted in a case-by-case basis. A written request is required; otherwise it may be counted as cheating.
2. Assignment:
a. The program has to be named as ucount.c.
b. ucount is a word counting program that reads the contents of a file, counts how many lines, how many space-delimited words, how many occurrences for each letter, digital, and punctuation in the opened file. Note that capitals and lower case are considered as the identical.
c. The result should be printed to the screen (the standand output stream). Do not write the output to a file!
d. The filename should be a part of the command line arguments. Do not promoting interactively from your program.
3. Synopsis: ucount filename
4. Example: % cat sample.txt The sed utility is a stream editor that reads one or more text files, makes editing changes according to a script of editing commands, and writes the results to standard output. The script is obtained from either the script operand string, or a combination of the option-arguments from the -e script and -f script_file options.
% ucount sample.txt 6 lines, 55 words, and 328 characters a:18 e:26 i:25 o:22 u:5

6. Special Notes:
a. It is your own responsibility to make sure your program can be successfully compiled and executed in the environment of AFS. Useless argument, such as "My program works perfectly in other machine" goes no where and get no credit.
b. If you use gcc compiler, the first line of your program should read as #define gcc
d. If you use c++ compiler, the first line of your program should read as // define c++ or // define g++
e. Submitting your assignment by direct e-mail is not acceptable.
Deliverables: do what the program tell you to do..and nothing else.
