VB/ASP DEVELOPER AND CONSULTANT
I do short term contracts for a variety of companies including IPD Magazines, CyberKart and the Maxim Group (see below). The contracts involve fixing and improving ASP-based websites, writing COM objects and stored procedures and handling SQL problems.
Maxim Group
October 1999 to June 2001
San Diego, Ca.
SENIOR VISUAL BASIC PROGRAMMER AND WEB DEVELOPER
Maxim is a consulting company. I've done three contracts through them. Maxim still uses me to do technical interviews of prospective employees and contractors.
-My third contract (August 2000 to June 2001) was with Mitchell International.
I did bug fixes and feature additions on a very large VB program. This involved writing lots of new code (including COM objects) in VB as well as writing stored procedures in SQL Server. This program is gradually being moved from straight VB to a web based application. I wrote the ASP code and created COM objects for the transition.
-My second contract (April 2000 to July 2000) was with Wireless Knowledge, a Microsoft / Qualcomm joint venture. I wrote IIS Applications (VB WebClasses) meant to be part of an administration web site for Wireless Knowledge's "WorkStyle" product (which allows users to access MS Outlook from their cell phone).
I also did a lot of ASP and COM for various Wireless Knowledge web sites.
-My first contract through Maxim (October 1999 to April 2000) was with WorldxChange, a long distance company and ISP. I maintained multiple InterDev web projects, working e-commerce sites and ASP-based web applications. I wrote VB database apps and COM objects that work with WorldxChange's web sites. This often involved single applications that interact with data from Oracle, SQL Server and AS/400 databases, some with GUI's, others meant to run in the background.
WorldxChange does a great deal of e-commerce using Microsoft Site Server 3.0. I wrote several pipeline scriptor components and was responsible for troubleshooting a Commerce Server site.
Abaris Technologies
July 1999 To October 1999
San Diego, Ca.
SENIOR ASP PROGRAMMER
(Three-month contract through Volt Technical). Abaris is a web application consultant company, dealing mostly with parts catalogs for very large organizations.
- I was responsible for creating interfaces between their web applications and various catalog systems by writing Visual Basic 6 programs and COM components.
- I modified and maintained their ASP-based web applications.
- I also wrote an ASP-based web application (in Visual InterDev 6.0) for tracking and reporting QA issues during program development.
Syzygy Technologies
March 1998 To July 1999
San Diego, Ca.
SYSTEMS ENGINEER
Syzygy is primarily a government contractor. My work was entirely on a single contract with the Navy's SPAWAR Systems Center San Diego, specifically the Theater Medical Core Services (TMCS) project. At various times during the contract other Syzygy employees were brought in to complete specific programming tasks. When this happened I was in charge of their work and responsible for integrating their code into the project.
- I integrated three separate visual basic 5 programs into a single program called the Lightweight Data Entry Tool (LDET). This program is used by military medical technicians to enter patient and MTF (Medical Treatment Facility) data and send this data via the Internet to a central database. The LDET uses an Access database and the central database server is a Sybase database.
- The LDET communicated over the Internet through a Java program called the MMS (Medical Messaging Service). I devised a way to turn the MMS into a java bean and then, through Sun's Java to ActiveX bridge, into an ActiveX object. This made communications between the programs easy.
- I wrote the entire ASP / HTML/ VBScript and set up the database connection through ActiveX Data Objects (ADO). I wrote all the SQL statements used for data retrieval and was in charge of updating and maintaining the site as needed. I used Visual InterDev (and Notepad) to create the ASP.
