Description:
I need a stable whois server that should run as a service on windows 2000 server. This server must be in Visual Basic 6 and must serve up to 1000 concurrent connections. This will server simple phone numbers that will be taken from a MYSQL DB. The functionallity should be the same as a whois server for internet domains (ex. whois.internic.net) that serve registrant, etc. after a domain request, but it will receive only surname request and it will serve telephone(s) number. It will work on port 43. The datas and the retrieving of them are not a problem because i will provide the connection to db and the retrieving of datas after your job. I need only the program that will receive question and send the informations. You can test it without any datas but only with a select case "smith" or "brown" to catch the correct phone number. I will modify it later.
Deliverables: 1) Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done.
2) Installation package that will install the software (in ready-to-run condition) on the platform(s) specified in this bid request.
3) Complete ownership and distribution copyrights to all work purchased.
Platform:
Windows 2000 server with latest service pack and Internet Explorer.
Must be 100% finished and received by buyer on:
May 30, 2003 EDT

Hello.
I read your requirements and it seems that you actually need a server writen in VB that can serve 1000 simultaneous TCP and/or UDP requests on port 43. The RFC for the WHOIS protocol will not be implemented (ie. flags, database format, etc.) since you have only one request to process and will do the lookup yourself on your own database. The only problem would be to thread each connection request so it does not tie up the listening thread.
I have already written a pure VB server (no OCX, just calls to wsock32.dll) that spawns a separate thread per connection, and which can easily handle the number of connections you require on a 256MB Win2K server. My only apprehension is the memory and processor load that the concurrent connections will require.
Should you wish to stress test the server, i would be most happy to send you a demo app. If the server is all you need to have done, I can deliver it in 2 days.
Best regards.

Hello.
Here is my bid for the server application. I trust that it will be acceptable given the quality of the code you expect to be delivered.
Best regards.
