Description:
Our Compaq Presario 1800T laptop, with tons of critical information, is seriously ill and we need to rescue the information on its drive before reformatting it and upgrading from its present WinME (yes, tsk, tsk, we know). When we boot it seems normally starting, it lets us log into our network, then a few seconds later the screen goes blue though you can see the cursor, which you can move, and nothing else. CTRL ALT DEL shows no programs, just let's you shut down.
The great thing is that there's a shared directory on the drive that CAN be seen by the other computers and the contents of that can be copied onto those computers. If we could just move the directories we need into the shared directory we'd be golden!
We don't have an ME startup disk but we do have a Win98 one, and with the xcopy command we've managed to move several folders into the shared directory. It's a tedious process and a big problem is it makes all our file names 8 characters long. It's tedious because the drive was nearly full -- about 1 GB free out of 30 (yes, we know, another no no) -- so we can't just copy all of, say, "My Documents", because it won't fit. We have to go almost folder by folder in DOS, shutting down the laptop each time, restarting it until that blue screen mentioned above, moving out the files on the network from the other computer, deleting those that were moved from the shared directory to make space, restarting the laptop in DOS mode, and beginning the xcopy process again in the next folder -- all the while losing our file names to 8 character DOS generated ones.
We've tried the standard disk repair and checking from Ontrack SystemSuite and various Norton products and no problems were reported.
See below what we&'re looking for. Thanks!
Deliverables: What we'd like is the data to put onto either a floppy disk or to burn onto a CD which will allow us to move the folders to the SHARED directory (c:\mydocu~1\SHARED). We're not computer experts here, if this can be made as idiot proof as possible, that would be great. The computer has no physical damage, it does boot from the floppy drive and would boot from a self-booting CD. Again, we can put the data onto a floppy or CD from another computer, BUT we need exact instructions either written to accompany the disk, or better yet, the program should tell us exactly what to do, i.e.:
"Select folders from the list below which you want moved to the SHARED direcory". And it would either list all our folders or allow us to browse to them.
Can you help? Thank you! It's urgent we get to this data quickly, please include how long it will take you to do this...
1) Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done.
2) Installation package that will install the software (in ready-to-run condition) on the platform(s) specified in this bid request.
3) Complete ownership and distribution copyrights to all work purchased.
Platform:
The laptop is Windows ME.
We also have a Win98SE and a WinXP computer here from which we can burn CDs or floppies.

Hello,
We can help you. We can create custom linux floppy disk with FAT32 support (default Win98 and WinME filesystem). You'll can boot from it and move all files from one directory to another. If you want we can recomend you ready-to-run linux distribution which can mount all partitions of your hard disk. You'll can access all network shares directly from this linux distribution and copy all files directly to another PC.
Regards, Sycamore Systems
