Description:
Looking for the vb6 code (without having to use or add any new ocx's or dlls) to allow my app to check online to see if there is an updated version of my software.
This needs to be written as a well commented procedure (or two). When this procedure is called, the following needs to happen:
The procedure will first silently test to see if there is a live interenet connection (perhaps by seeing if it can get the data from my page at afraidtoask.com/version.htm.
If there is a live internet connection, the code must check to see if the current version of the app is the latest version or not. If there is an update, a window should pop open alerting the user to this fact and allowing the user to click a button that will take them to a login page (you can just have the button direct them to afraidtoask.com, for now).
If there is no connection available, the user should get a window that advises them to connect to the internet so they can check if there is an update available. If they connect, let them then click a button to check to see if a newer version exists.
That's all I need, though any other suggestions would be appreciated if you have a better way to do this. Essentially, I want this to sort of work like McAfee or Norton antiviral software that regularly checks for online updates and alerts the user if they are present.
Since I've been burned before by coders promising they can do the job easily, then not delivering. I will only consider a bid if there is a demo (or the project code) that will do what I need. (There is a test file which I've put a file online at http://www.afraidtoask.com/version.htm that has an example of the current version number.
thanks.

Hello
I'm Andreas Stricker. I made an extract of a software, where I have done something similar. I checked it out with your site, and it works fine. I attached it (It's a VB6-EXE). I identify the Version String in your HTML by searching for the 1st P-Tag and compare it with the current program version.
I think, this is a clear way for the user to simple update the software. I don't have any other better suggestions for you. I can give you the code with some suggestions from you within 1 day after accepting my bid.
Best Regards Andreas Stricker |
