Using a system similiar to the Napster clients of yore, the client will login to the central server, publish their client information and their dating information, and then download a list of all other users (that match a certain criteria, etc). When a user decides to contact a user, view a picture, or use Video Chat, the client will connect directly to the remote user (not the server) to download the picture or setup the data transfer. Currently AOL's Instant Messenger (AIM) works in just this fashion, and the success and power of this network setup can be seen by their success. Let me comment of each of your requirements: View photos of thousands of members and upload 3 of your own pictures in seconds - We would suggest that the pictures be stored on each user's computer, and when another user wants to view a picture his client connects to the remote client to download the picture. This not only saves storage space and traffic to your server, but it possibly relieves you from the legal duty of scanning picture to make sure they are appropriate, etc. We could, of course, set the network up to store the pictures on the server. In the background, the client also downloads the user's IP address and a connection port. Instant message members and eliminate waiting hours or days for email responses - Since only online users are displayed, selecting any user automatically starts a connection with the remote computer to transfer the instant message data. The user will have the common functions of AIM -- change font color/size, use basic HTML in conversations, send pictures, etc. Send and receive email messages as well - The client can either simply list the remote users email, so that the user can manually send the email, you could assign all users an email account on your server and let them use that account, and/or the client software can automatically check/send emails.
