Description:
I have been told by a local network "expert" that what I want to do is not possible. I am hopeful there is somebody out there that can come up with a good solution. Here is our need -- I want to be able to FORCE a set of client machines running windows 98 to login to a Win2000 server setup to share certain directories/files across a network. If the user logs in with a correct name and password under 98, everything works, I just do not want to be able to give them the option to cancel out of the 98 login.
We are fairly well versed in VB, but have NO experience working with networks. It would seem to me that a small VB utility that ran at startup, and required a valid login to the NT system would be ideal here -- if a valid login name and password were not supplied, the client machine would be "locked" so that is could not be used... We would need the VB source to make this happen, and would prefer a solution implemented entirely in VB, however, if third-party controls are required to provide the functionality we need, we would consider purchasing them as well..
We have no problem bypassing the default Win98 login screen if that is the best option, the desktop look and info provided will be the same across all potential users. Access to specific directories is the only thing impacted by the login given. One other note, this is for a small school setting, so the security is not a real high priority, creating a clean, simplified user experience is most important.
More details can be provided to anyone interested in this.
Thanks
Darin Grimm

Hi, just to clarify your needs: 1_Do you need a different password for all users? 2_What you need is to have access to Win98 clients' hard disk from the server? or from the clients to a shared disk in the server? 3_Will passwords expire?
Most of the login behavioors can be set using the system policies and the windows configuration.
Regards,
