Description:
We are looking for ideas/software to control the distribution of our software. We dont believe anyone has really cracked a way of distributing software and protecting it from illegal copying onto too many PC's within the organisation that has bought it, or from people copying it to other companies.

So we are looking for a solution ! Either just ideas, or some nifty components for tying software to specific PC's, or control concurrent usage; or a complete security software solution that can wrap around our software. We will welcome any contribution !

Our application is very simple, being just VB programs that update a shared MS Access Database (so there is no server process.

We want to:-

When we issue say a 5 user license which will ship with a serial number, we want the user to obtain an activation key (from us via phone or Web) which also encodes an expiry date, that together with something site specific (maybe by the CPU number where the database resides ?) computes a code.

Our app will recompute the code each time it starts to make sure that it is running on the valid network, and that the license period hasnt expired.

Problem:- What happens if the user wants to move the database. Is there a better way ?

Our app will also log each user in the database to make sure that the number of concurrent users is not exceeded.

Problem:- What happens if the application does not terminate correctly ? Do we need a timer to keep saying "I'm still logged on !" Is there a better way ?

Deliverables:
Dependent on bids.

If end bid includes development:-

Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done.

Complete copyrights to all work purchased.

Platform:
Windows 95 and above

I'm a professional software engineer, and have been programming for over 10 years.

I can provide what you have requested in your required time frame.

I have implemented various protection schemes for some of the software I have written.

I know how to ensure that the software can only be installed on specific computers. A keep-alive timer is a good way to check for correct # of users and allow for improper shut-downs.

If you would like me to be more specific about how I can accomplish these things, let me know.

I would use InstallShield to create the installation package, because the package creator that comes with VB does not have the flexibility to accept serial #'s and what-not.

If you would like to see an installation I've done, I'd be happy to send you one.

Thank you for the opportunity to bid on your project. I look forward to doing business with you!
