Description:

I have a nearly completed and working Perl script for a simple bulletin board as a homework assignment. It is comprised of an HTML page using 3 row frames. The upper frame simply holds a banner and has no scroll. The second frame is printed to from the entry form, which is in the lower frame. you can see it at http://cs3.sunyocc.edu/~grayj/board/bbindex.html

What I want to do is to send an email to any "responder" to a given topic. In other words, if Jack opens a topic "Happy Time" with a comment and if Harry responds to this topic, an email is sent to Jack informing him.

The MAIL is already scripted (see the end of the script). However, I need to figure out how to implement this. I MUST stay with the existing structure for both the script and the Web page. I only want to edit the existing script and/or web page to allow for this feature.

I will include, in zip format, the existing Perl script and all HTML docs.

Should be simple for those Perl experts out there!

Additional information:

  • Changing the output in the center frame to a threaded forum is acceptable and, in fact, may be the best format to respond directly to a given topic. However, please try to continue using the form entry page and assign the refreshed 'print' statements to the center frame
  • Email currently works. However, the *requirement* for this script is to send an email to a topic originator ONLY in response to a "Reply" to the topic. Currently, this email is generated whenever the submit button is activated. Therefore, the originator of the topic receives the same email message. I envision this as a link, called "response" or "reply", placed in each refreshed thread. When that link is activated another form, similar to the one in the bottom frame, will be displayed. Fields that will be auto-filled should be the originators email and topic. Additional fields should be the responders first name and email address. After submitting the completed form the email should be generated.
  • If at all possible, I would like this accomplished by using only one perl script rather than trying to link 2 or 3 scripts.

Deliverables:
1) Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done.

2) Must have any changes in script or HTML documented so that I know exactly what was done to implement the required functionality.

3) Complete ownership and distribution copyrights to all work purchased.

Platform:
Should run on IE and Netscape

Must be 100% finished and received by buyer on:
Mar 22, 2003 EDT
Deadline legal notes: All times are expressed in the time zone of the site EDT (UT - 5). If the buyer omitted a time, then the deadline is 11:59:59 PM EDT on the indicated date.

Additional Files:
This bid request includes IMPORTANT additional attached files. Please download and read fully before bidding.

Remember that contacting the other party outside of the site (by email, phone, etc.) on all business projects < $500 (before the buyer's money is escrowed) is a violation of both the software buyer and seller agreements. We monitor all site activity for such violations and can instantly expel transgressers on the spot, so we thank you in advance for your cooperation. If you notice a violation please help out the site and report it. Thanks for your help.

Hi, I would love to help you with your project. I have a couple of questions before I can make a reasonable bid.

  • Where is your data stored? (i.e. when the user submits the form, do you send it to a database? flat file?)
  • I would like to see the site, I tried your link and it was coming up 'Page cannot be found'
Please answer my questions and I'll get a bid up here as soon as I hear back from you.
Looking forward to working with you
