Description:
Develop a small C++ Multimedia Support library that can be compiled and linked under Visual C++ 6.0. The library must include a simple high-level API that offers some general configuration information:
CPU Type and Speed OS Type and Version Available RAM Installed Audio/Video Codecs Graphics Card Type Soundcard Type Screen Resolution Default Browser DirectX Version (if installed) CD Read Speed Rating (e.g. 1x to 52x)
(Any read test to determine CD Speed should be brief and doesn't need to be highly precise: just want a rough single average rating of read throughput.)
In addition, the library should determine which of the following media players is installed:
RealOne Player (RealPlayer) Windows Media Player QuickTime Player A few other popular media players (e.g. Winamp 3) The library also needs to reliably locate and supply a version ID string (e.g. Media Player Version "8.00.00.4777") for every installed player (reading the proper registry entries for each app as needed).
The library must work reliably under all recent versions of Windows (Windows 95/ME/98/NT/2000/XP). It should also recognize old versions of popular players (e.g. Media Player 6.4); for testing purposes, the following site appears to have some previous versions of popular media players: http://www.oldversion.com.
A program using the library must be able to determine the information above without leaving any footprint (e.g. be able to run directly off a CD without requiring installation).
No GUI is needed for this initial project; a simple test-drive console app demonstrating how to use the library will be fine. Source code should be clearly commented and well organized.
This is a very small introductory project that may lead to larger multimedia-related projects if successful.
Deliverables: 1) Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done.
2) Executable test program demonstrating use of library.
3) Installation package that will install the software (in ready-to-run condition) on the platform(s) specified in this bid request.
4) Complete ownership and distribution copyrights to all work purchased.
Platform:
Visual C++ 6 Windows 95/ME/98/NT/2000/XP
Must be 100% finished and received by buyer on:
Mar 28, 2003 EDT
Deadline legal notes: All times are expressed in the time zone of the site EDT (UT - 5). If the buyer omitted a time, then the deadline is 11:59:59 PM EDT on the indicated date.
Remember that contacting the other party outside of the site (by email, phone, etc.) on all business projects < $500 (before the buyer's money is escrowed) is a violation of both the software buyer and seller agreements.
We monitor all site activity for such violations and can instantly expel transgressers on the spot, so we thank you in advance for your cooperation.
If you notice a violation please help out the site and report it. Thanks for your help.

I have been developing low-level multimedia applications for many years now. What you have specified here is very straightforward and simple enough to do. I can develop you a either a static library or dll in either straight C or C++.
However you do need to be more specific about every meida player you want a version about. A vague statement like 'A few other popular media players (e.g. Winamp 3)' is not precise enough for a deliverable specification.
Thanks, Neal Munsie NamTac Group
