Description:
For an initial prototype system, I need a user-friendly, Java-based data editor designed to modify just a variation of the attached XML file; the file is an excerpt--some additional elements are in the complete version but the structure isn't extensive in this initial phase. This prototype is part of a larger effort that may lead to web-based XML development requests in the future (e.g. Apache Cocoon, XML web services).
While a number of generic XML editors were considered, the custom editor would include (if needed) non-generic data entry forms that allow an end-user (not familiar with XML) to easily add, modify, and delete 'customer', 'order', and 'invoice' entries (using a tree view and custom forms for example). The editor should allow a user to create Invoice line items that refer back to existing orders (via combobox selection, for example). The editor only needs to edit a single XML file and operates single-user with no other data interface requirements in this phase.
Experienced XML/Java developers only please; any references (or relevant samples/demos) appreciated.
Complete XML sample data file and XML Schema will be provided at start of project.
Thanks for your time.
Deliverables: 1) Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done.
2) Installation package that will install the software (in ready-to-run condition) on the platform(s) specified in this bid request.
3) Complete ownership and distribution copyrights to all work purchased.
Platform:
Windows 2000/XP

Hello, I have worked up a simple mock java application that sounds similar to what you described in the bid request. I have a lot of experience working with xml, web applications, web services and java. I also have a lot of database experience (I presume that if this prototype becomes a production application you would choose to store the info in a database rather than a flat xml file). I have done a lot of work for a major insurance carrier, designing and developing components for the company's internet sites. I also have experience designing user interface components in java. I think you would also want to add a search function to the editor, allowing searches by customer name or id and maybe by the date fields on the order and invoice objects. Using a DOM parser (Apache Xerces for example) would allow you to build the tree view, search it, and update it with the least amount of overhead.
Please let me know if this is not close to what you are looking for.
Thanks! Natt Hammond
